Taken at Monte Cristo of the servants quarters it contains some sort of weird looking fog/mist type substance. However, the mist you are seeing is not fog.

Possible explanation: As was pointed out to me (Rowena), Reg Ryan (current owner of Monte Cristo) noticed that the photo appeared to match an old photograph of the face of Christopher Crawley, the original owner of Monte Cristo? Very strange.......
