A VISIT FROM DEATH

Do you know the place between sleep and awake? The place where visions are had and spiritual visits occur? This is were death visits me. Not with a scythe in his bony hand and fire coming from his eyes. Death visits in the form of my friends and the clients I have taken care of that have died.

I work in house for the elderly handicapped and I try to take good care of them and make sure they have every need met. When one of them dies they take apart of me with them. I feel there loss deeply. My first experience with this made me question if I was in the right line of work. Death is never easy and its something I've never really had to deal with on a personal level.

I learned to tell when someone was going to die, not by how sick they are, but by the strange events that occur to me. I don't always know who is going to die next, but I do know someone is going to die. It first starts with a touch and hearing bells, strange angelic bells, and then a calm peaceful hush comes over me. The next thing that happens is that time between awake and asleep. I see someone sitting beside my bed or standing next to my couch. It is always someone I know who brought me great joy in knowing them and taking care of them. They smile at me to assure me that it will be okay, the person who is going to die does have friends waiting for them. Then it is a matter of time before the person dies. I can feel it and make every effort to comfort them, because they too know they are going to die. After they die, they make one last visit. Sometimes they make several visits to the home where they were taken care of or to me in my tiny apartment. If it is at the home it is their laugh or smell, or a song being whispered in my ear. Andrew loved "Take Me Out To The Ball Game." If it is in my apartment, they catch me just before I drift off to sleep and they smile to say thank you and they are all fine. Losing one of my clients, or rather, my babies, is hard but I know they are there for all of us. They are there for the dying and they are there for the living making sure we know they're okay.
