I received quite a scare this weekend while driving home from my in-laws.
I had met my husband after work on Friday to drop our two boys off at Gram's for a much needed evening alone. After a quiet dinner and a movie my husband decided to stay and talk with his parents. It was late so I left to get the kids to bed, dreading the two hour drive home. The boys were asleep before we left town so I turned off the radio and wished we hadn't taken both cars. The trip was very uneventful until I got to the long straight away before the turn off to the house. (Note:we live out in the middle of nowhere) I was just about to the turn off, looking out for deer and other furry woodland road kill, when I see a horse come onto the lane not two car lengths in front of me.
I slammed on my brakes and screeched to a halt in front of the horse. The beast didn't even flinch as I sat shaking in my seat. I realized then that it was hitched to a wagon. There was not a driver so I'm wondering what the heck is this doing out so late at night. My blood ran cold as it vanished just as it reached the other lane.
It was so real, I thought I was losing my mind. I could see the horse's hot breath in the night air and hear the creaking of the rickety old wagon. I sat there panicking wondering if I had fallen asleep at the wheel or something to rationalize what I just saw! That's when my three year old who I thought was still asleep says,"Mama horsey!". I gasped, mashed down the gas pedal and lit off for home. I wasn't sticking around to figure it out.
I have traveled this road many times night and day but I never had seen or felt anything like that before. Your guess is as good as mine. I know I'll be a little more leery next time I drive at night.
