When I was approximately five or six years old, my family (mother, brother, sister and another couple) were driving home around 11:00 p.m. at night in the country near where I live, going home to the city after visiting my mother's friends who had a farm. All of a sudden my mother said, in the most eerie voice, "what is that?".
The man driving the car then replied "I don't know, let's stop and see". So he proceeded to slow down the car and I looked up from the back seat to the left side of the road and saw a rather tall lady, older, but not too old, wearing a dress that was flowing in the wind, except that there was no wind. My mother was the first to say that there was no wind, then her face turned a shade of pale I will never forget, visible
even in the black of night. The car had come to a complete stop and my brother who was
to the left of me opened the car window and we looked at this lady, noticing that
she was not standing on the ground, but rather floating, so-to-speak, at least a
foot off the ground, and again, her dress was brightly lit, as if she was glowing, and it
was flowing in the wind. I do recall she had white hair and was smiling a very big
smile for all of us to see individually. I mean that she looked at each and every one of us
and smiled. I smiled back at her and got the feeling that she was sad
when she looked at me. I don't know what this means, but I will never forget this
look she had. The driver of the vehicle then, I think after realizing what he was looking
at, became agitated and said "Let's get out of here, I don't know what that is and I
don't want to know!". He then rolled up his window and took off. I could see then that
the three adults in the front seat were in a state of shock as no one said a word for
a few minutes, and then my mother said "Let's go back and see because I think this
is something strange", or something to that effect. I will never forget the
look on my mother's face either, as if she were terrified, but she was still curious
enough to want to go back to see if what she saw was really what she saw. We did turn
around, but of course there was nothing to see as the lady must have disappeared.
When I got home that night, I still saw that lady in my mind's eye, as if imprinted on
my memory, and to this day I have not forgotten what she looked like. For a long time
I dreamt about her as did the others, and I did see her when I would close my eyes.
I was so young that I didn't know what I had seen until years later, after not being
able to forget what I saw, I tried to rationalize what had happened that clear
summer night. No one in the family had ever talked about that experience and I did
go to my other siblings and discuss this with them and although my brother did
acknowledge that he had seen the same thing, he didn't want to talk about it. My sister
also admitted to seeing this figure, but concluded her explanation by saying that she
thought we were all hallucinating. All of us at the same time? I don't believe that
and I believe my own eyes.
After a lot of pondering as to why we all saw this lady at the
same time I can only imagine that she was there to slow the car down as my mother did
admit that the driver was going very fast and we were heading toward the main
highway. Could she have appeared to us to save our lives? Could be. This is the
only explanation I can come up with to this day. I have never heard of a group
of people all seeing the same thing and I would very much like to hear from someone
who has.
There is no doubt that I saw something that has stayed with me all these
years, some 30 years now, and I will never forget her face.
