Several years ago my grandfather became very sick. I was only about 8 years old then and didn't really understand a lot of what was going on with my grandfather's illness. It was early in the year of 1991 when he finally passed away. My grandfather was diagnosed with leukemia, and spent a lot of time in the hospital during his illness. Away from the dairy farm which he started, the beautiful fields and the empty crossroads.
I cannot remember for sure how long after he died before this 'encounter' happened. My dad was in the barn milking cows with my uncle, and for some reason me and my brother were a little ways from the farm at a little brook near the side of the road. We were throwing rocks in the brook, I guess trying to see if we could skip any across the water. My grandfather had always told us not to throw rocks in the brook, but we were anyway. It was mid-afternoon at that time, and slowly a truck came down the hill. My grandfather sort of had a one-of-a-kind truck, and this truck seemed to look a lot like it. The truck slowed down at the bottom of the hill where the brook was, and the man in the truck shook his head at us in disapproval, and I noticed that he looked oddly like my grandfather. Then the truck continued on, past the barn and into the driveway where he once lived.
The driveway had two entrances, and I for some strange reason, watched the truck go in one, drive around in the dooryard and exit through the other one. It continued up the hill (the farm is sort of in a valley) and I forgot about it, while my brother and I continued to play by the brook.
A short while later, I heard the truck coming back down the hill, past the barn and I watched it turn out onto the long bumpy crossroad. I never really paid close attention, but I looked out onto the crossroad a moment or two after the truck had turned onto it, and could no longer see it..even though you can see almost to the end of the crossroad.
To this day, I am not sure of what actually happened. I never really paid much attention to it until a few years ago, and I guess made some conclusions myself. It seemed too odd, to me anyway, that this was all a big coincidence. Call me crazy, but I sometimes think that was my grandfather in that truck, taking one last drive to say good-bye.
