LIGHTS OUT

There have always been strange occurrences in the house and village where I grew up. No one had died in our house and the village for what I knew was quiet and crime free. Two occurrences still scare me to death.

I was about 14 and had a few friends overnight. My parents were not planning to be home until after 11 so we went out to the park and for a night walk. Before I had left, we ensured that we set the alarm, turn out the lights and locked the house. It was a habit more than anything because of the valuable gun collection my father had. When we returned, all the lights in the house were on and the front and back door were wide open. Scared but trying to be brave in front of my friends, I walked up to the back door and hollered in. Of course no one answered. Being more scared than anything, we left running to the neighbors house which was about 2 city blocks away.

Our neighbors returned with us and as we got closer to the front yard, all the lights were off and the doors were closed. The man who had come over with us looked at us like we were crazy. He disarmed the alarm and went in (without us) and nothing was stolen or missing. We got into a lot of trouble for that.

About 7 years later, I was home alone and watching a movie. All the sudden, the power turned off. Being all too aware of how scary this was, I remained in my same spot for a while and then in a race, got up to run to the front door. I couldn't find the handle. I felt everywhere and it wasn't there. I felt my way to the back door and couldn't find the handle there either. I started panicking and locked myself in the bathroom. Shortly after, the lights went back on and I came out of the bathroom, shaking and scared. Both doors to the house were wide open and the alarm was disarmed. I was so scared that I grabbed my car keys and ran to the car and left down the road.

Worried about my safety, sanity and my dad's gun collection, I drove back and the doors were all closed again.

I refuse to stay alone in that house. When I go home, I often have nightmares and feel watched. I have never felt that way anywhere else.
