NAVY BASE HAUNTING

This story was told to me by several Navy Sailors who work at Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Washington. I'm an editor for our base newspaper and was told this story which we used in our weekly issue last October.

It all centers around our base Photo Lab which was originally built in the early 40s as a dispensary. One of the base photographers had duty one night and was awoken at home around 2am in the morning by Security Police to come back and open the Photo Lab after seeing a light and shadow in the window while making security rounds. He arrived to let the security guard in with his patrol dog to search the rooms inside. When they reached the room where he suspected something was going on, the door was still locked and lights were now off. This office housed expensive imaging equipment and was kept locked after hours. The Sailor opened the door to this room and as the security guard pushed the dog inside, he reached for his gun, but the highly-trained dog came running out in fear. Again, the guard pushed in the dog. The guard switched on the light and searched the room, but there was nothing.

Many Sailors working there by themselves after hours have reported hearing strange footsteps in the old tiled hallways, but there is never anyone there. One Sailor cleaning out the supply cabinet one weekend had hear the door open and someone coming down the hallway. He shouted, "I'm in here." He didn't get a reply, so went out to look...no one was there. Another Sailor reported that on several occasions he'd turn off equipment only to find it on the next morning. He said he has the only key to the building besides the officer in charge. He would find the radio blaring in the morning, Xerox and computers on, too, after turning them off the night before.

There's still old medicine cabinets in the building that they use them to store photography equipment. Another Navy photographer's office is in what use to be a surgery room. He said he hadn't seen anything unusual, but does get weird feelings sometimes working in there. They're wondering if some "patients" are still walking the halls. Who knows, maybe one day they'll capture something on file.
