BROWN MOUNTAIN LIGHTS, NC

There is a place not far from where I live, outside a town
called Morgonton NC, called Brown Mountain. The place has
been said to have been haunted for centuries.
Long ago, before North Carolina was colonized, it was the battle site
where the Cherokee Indians battled the Catawba. The battle
lasted all day and when night fell the Indian maidens took
up torches and walked up the mountain side in search of
there slain husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons. Legend
has it that that moment was so dramatic that the Indian
maidens long after there death would still be searching for
there lost loved ones throughout eternity and that the ghost
lights from their torches would be able to be seen in the
valley below.
There are also many other ghost stories such as
a slave who lost his master in a winter storm during the
civil war and was lost on that mountain and never seen
again. Some people believe that it is he who is responsible
for the lights on the mountain, still searching for his
long dead master.
My favorite story is one of a drunkard
who lived just outside of Morganton near the foot of Brown
Mountain.
He used to beat his wife if she so much as breathed wrong. The local towns people thought she was a
fool for staying with the man. But still she loved him and
stayed by his side. Well one night while in a drunken rage, the man beat the woman unconscious and dragged her out to a large rock where he killed his chickens and cut off her head with an axe. They say the lights shined brightly
immediately following after that and that the man went insane and ran off, he was never heard from again.
It is my personal belief that brown mountain is not inhabited by one ghost, but many many ghosts. Its been the site of death and conflict for several hundred years and to this day it remains mostly uninhabited and unfriendly.
I've seen the lights myself. They appear as glowing orbs, some green, some white, some orange, some violet, and they move up and down the mountain side in erratic patterns to disappear at the very top. They can be seen in all manner of weather conditions and usually at any time of night, the best time to see them is during a light drizzle.
