GHOSTS AND ACCIDENTS
Only my very closest friends know the following. I have
not discussed it with my parents or my sister, so I
honestly don't know if they have ever experienced anything
out of the ordinary, or if I was the only one (although one
instance was a shared experience with a friend, so there
was a witness for that one event).
I grew up in a rural area. It wasn't far from the city,
but it wasn't exactly the suburbs either. We had neighbors
on either side of us (with about an acre between the
homes), but across the street was a big corn field. The
road was fairly well-traveled but very dark at night, and
it curved up a hill before passing our house. I think it
was because of this that there were many accidents in front
of our house. I guess people would be going too fast and
not paying attention. I remember many nights hearing a
loud noise and then running out into the yard with my
father to do what we could to help before the paramedics
and fire department arrived.
The accidents were usually
pretty serious. Many of the cars became airborne after
hitting the curve, and probably 9 times out of 10, the cars
had flipped. Some survived these accidents, but many did
not. I don't know if this is what caused the spooky things
in our house or not, but it's the only explanation I can
think of since our house was not that old and we knew the
original owners, so nothing bad had happened in the house
(that I know of, anyway).
I don't really remember when I started noticing strange
things. It's just something I remember from my teenage
years (we moved into that house when I was 13 and I moved
out when I went to college and haven't lived there since).
As I remember, it happened on a fairly regular basis.
What
I first noticed was that I would see people in the mirror
in my bathroom. The bathroom was at the end of a long
hall, and when the door was open, the mirror reflected the
hall. I would be looking in the mirror, putting on make up
or fixing my hair, and in the mirror I would see someone
walking down the hall. When I turned to look, the hall was
empty. This happened many times, and it was often
different people that I saw in the hall (although, I always
saw them individually).
The two that I saw the most and
remember most clearly were a man and a woman. The man was
tall and wearing a dark suit. The woman was slender, she
had dark hair that she wore up, and she wore a maroon
blouse and sort of khaki pants. I never saw these people's
faces--it was always the back of them as they walked down
the hall away from me.
Occasionally other things would
happen, for example the blinds in my bedroom would sway and
wave for no reason. There were no fans or air conditioning
on, and the window was not open. I also often felt as
though someone was in the room with me at night. I never
saw anyone in there, but it was a definite feeling that I
had that still makes me shiver today to think of it.
Probably one of the strangest experiences that I had
happened one night when my friend was over. We were silly
teenagers and fooling around with a Ouija board. The board
kept "telling" us something about an accident and the corn
field. We just sort of laughed it off and figured that if
anything it was talking about an accident that had happened
some time in the past. As we were sitting there, we heard
what sounded to us like one of those aluminum trash cans
rolling down the street. We looked out the window but
didn't see anything. We went back to what we were doing,
but then we heard what sounded like a car coming slowly up
the driveway. The driveway was fairly long, and the end of
it near the road was gravel. What we heard sounded like
gravel crunching under tires. My friend and I looked at
each other and he immediately jumped up and turned off the
light and ran to the window to look out. There was nothing
there. We sat there, discussing the situation, and finally
decided to go outside and see if we could find anything.
We looked around for a while but didn't see anything. We
were about to go back inside when a car came up the road.
I looked out into the street, and when the car's headlights
hit the corn field, they shone on the undercarriage of a
car. The "rolling trash can" sound we had heard was the
car flipping. It had ended up on its side in the corn
field, the undercarriage facing us and blending in to the
darkness.
It may have been just a coincidence, but I
really believe that something was using the Ouija board,
and when we wouldn't listen to that, the crunching gravel
sound to tell us that someone was in an accident and needed
help. If it hadn't been for that, with the way the car was
positioned, the accident may not have been discovered until
morning, and the person may not have survived.
