Ghost Stories 2002

HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY

Back In pre-historic times when I was still in high school, I moved with my family into a house that was as haunted as hell, pardon my language but I do mean Hell!

It was in the boring little town of Emporia Kansas. Sorry Fellow Ghost hunter's no address. I don't live there anymore thank god. I well tell you that it was in uncomfortable proximity to the town cemetery.

I can honestly say just about every day a hearse followed by a funeral procession passed our house.

It was a ranch style home built in the 1930s and had not been redecorated since. I still maintain that the previous owners should have been criminally charged; it was very disgusting, however, my parents gutted it and made it liveable.

When we moved in I choose the only room that didn't make me feel like hurling. It was that bad okay.

My room had pale pink walls and pink carpeting. Since it was in the front of the house I had a pretty view of a giant old oak tree. I put my bed in the windows. Had we moved in in the fall when the leaves were off the monstrous tree, I would have realized my error. For that time of year afforded me a view of rows upon rows of headstones, lovely eh?. Not what I wanted to look out my window and see every night before falling asleep.

The first night in our new home I learned that some of the previous occupants never left. I stayed up late reading and decided to get a snack from the kitchen. You had to walk though the family room to get there. On my way back through the family room I saw him. A man with no head floating in front of the mantle. He was just a gray mist I could only make out a shoulder, part of a suite jacket, white shirt and tie. I stared at it frozen with fear, when my legs worked again I dashed to my room. Once I regained myself I decided to go back to the kitchen to get some water for my thirsty cat. Sure enough he was still there but this time I didn't feel so scared, in fact I felt a slice of curiously and friendship.

After that I saw the headless man many times, always in the family room by the mantel, however not all the ghosts were so friendly.

Almost right away I began to notice rooms my cat wouldn't go into, horrendous odors, footsteps and so on. The guest room next to mine was the worst. my cat wouldn't even walk past that door. The windows in there would open and close on their own and an antique rocking chair would rock constantly. The room was icy cold and your hair stood on end when you went in there. Even the one wall that my room, and the guest room shared, was icy to the touch.
I always kept my crucifix on that wall.

The scariest thing was the guttural almost inhuman moans. They would start out soft and gradually get louder sometimes making the pictures shake on the walls. This didn't happen very often, which if you asked me was too much.

The basement was very creepy and full of cold spots. It felt like someone was following you, you would feel a cold breath on the back of your neck and turn to find no one visible there. I was scared to go down there alone.

Everyday when I came home from school and would be home alone, I would hear heavy footsteps coming from the unfinished part of the basement. The footsteps were loud and usually followed by even louder crashing noises. I got so frightened I almost called the police once. I yelled down the stairs " Get out!, I'm calling 911, I know your down there!" After that the footsteps stopped for that day.

Once while floating in the old pool with a friend we saw a dark haired women watching us from my parents bedroom window. My friend said " Look there's your mom!" but I was home alone and both of my parents were at work.

Once I stupidly decided to move downstairs because the old bedroom down there was really very big. As soon as I turned off the lights I became aware of a big dark figure lurking near the foot of the bed. With my favorite pillow under one arm and my cat under the other I high-tailed it back to my room upstairs.

When my mom asked me what changed my mind about the basement room I, I just told her it was too dark down there.

It wasn't until years later we actually started talking about our experiences in the house with each other.

While living there I had the worst nightmares of my life and would often wake up screaming in a cold sweat. Since the last night I spent there I have never had another nightmare.

Once when I couldn't sleep someone or something lifted my quilt from the foot of my bed and tucked me in. That didn't help.

Okay it's getting late so I'll finish with the strangest thing that ever happened to me in that house.

It was fall and I was laying in bed one night staring at the rows of headstones and crypts. I spotted a round red ball of light in the distance. I watched it float quickly from the old part of the graveyard through to the new, across the street, though the trees and right up to my bedroom windows. Then it floated back around the trees some more and finally disappeared. I spent the rest of the night cowering under my covers.

That's some of the freaky things that happened in that house. There was so much ghostly activity all the time that I could write a book. I won't tonight.

Take my advice never, never, live in a house even in the same neighborhood as a cemetery, however quaint the dwelling I assure it's not for the meek.

Sadly an elderly couple bought the house from my parents I only pray they're alright.

I DISTURBED A GRAVE

I have previously submitted my account of a haunting in a house I lived in years ago. however, the house I live in now is with out a doubt haunted as well. It wasn't always, is the thing.

For the first three years that we were here everything was quite and normal. Nothing out of the ordinary ever happened. Then our basement practically became an indoor swimming pool during a horrific rain storm. All the carpets had to be ripped out and new re laid. To prevent the clamity from reoccurring we had a renovation and dirt work done.

Our side yard was completely dug up during this time. When the project was finished and the basement put back together, it became apparent that a spectral tenant had moved in. Now my neighborhood is a historical land mark where the Oregon and Santa Fe Trials meet. The wagon trains would stop and camp for the night in the area that is now our street. All thats left of the actual sight is a park with big beautiful old trees.

So given the fact that when someone died the pioneers buried them along the way, I've concluded that I disturbed someone's grave.

It all began in the same fashion most hauntings do, Doors, windows, and cabinets opening and closing on their own. Lights flipping on and off including a broken lava lamp, ceiling fans turning on in full force, the TV and VCR turning on and off and so on. Then we began hearing the foot steps and voices.

I was laying in bed one night when my cat started growling for no reason and the room got very cold. I felt someone's breath on my neck and then I heard a deep raspy voice say " Hi"! I was afraid to roll over but when I finally did no one was there. Another time I was alone in the bathroom applying makeup when someone whispered "Hi" again and something so garbled I couldn't make it out.

The scariest time was another night I was laying in bed when I heard a choir of mens voices chanting I don't know what but it was deafening.I was so scared I couldn't move until it was over. I have a doll the keeps changing positions in her child sized chair. Every time I go into my room she has some how moved. My cat keeps getting shut in my closet by unseen hands and sometimes refuses to go into certain rooms. Often not one but all of the smoke detectors will go off for no reason.

That about sums up the activity, even guests experience something or other when staying over. It's creepy but all I can think is that I disturbed a grave.

Also worth mentioning is a sunken spot in my front yard where grass won't grow. The spot really bothered my father and one day he went at it with a shovel. After digging for quite a while he uncovered part of a flat strangely smooth stone. It was so large and heavy he couldn't unearth it so he buried it back, grass still doesn't grow very well there.

That could be nothing but then again it awfully weird considering the spooky events that are now taking pace in our home. The lot next door was vacant and grown over when we moved in.

A year later someone bought it and built a house. Since then we have had to many neighbor's move in and out of that house. The house next to it is empty and has been for a long time, few if any remember any one actually living there. It all adds up in mind to a real life version of the "Poltergeist" movies.

What do you think?

KATIE AND THE PRANKSTER

Some new things have happened and a new little ghost has moved in with the rest. I decided to update my story for I can't leave out Katie.

Katie is the ghost of a little girl who has recently taken up residence in my home along with several other entities.

I first noticed small hands touching my hair and face in bed at night. Then my childhood dolls I never had the heart to get rid of seemed to move around or fall from the shelf by their own accord. I often notice the smell of roses accompanied by a feeling of warmth; odd because usualy cold is felt when ghosts are around. Then I finally saw her late one night when I was watching TV in bed. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed someone standing at the foot of my bed. When I looked I saw a beautiful little girl with blue eyes and blonde curls wrapped in a blanket or shawl. She was transparent as I could see my dresser behind her. It happened so quickly that when I looked again she was gone. I was left with a cozy feeling and something telling me not to be afraid. I though about the little girl often after this happened and found myself wondering her name one night.

The next morning when I opened my makeup box the name Katie in child like hand writing was spelled in the powder film covering my mirror. I was stunned and I was careful not touch it so I could show it to a friend; but when I opened the box later it was gone. Kate also seems to like to bother the Barbies and house I keep around for my niece. Katie is a sweet little spirt whose presence I find comforting and not the least bit scary. Also around the time Katie came along so did a prankish ghost who's identity I have yet to learn. Before these to we only seemed to hear foot steps and voices of our other ghosts and the usual haunted house kinds of things. Now there seems to be a spirt who likes to play tricks on us. The first time I came into contact with this unwelcome guest was during a shower one night. I was finishing my hair when the sliding shower door flung open with such force that after slamming into the metal it shook. Very startled I looked around found no one so I closed the door and resumed my shower. Pretty stupid of me considering I live in a haunted house and all. I reached put for my lufus sponge but it wasn't hanging on the shower knob were I keep it. I opened the shower door again and peered out. There it was sitting all wet and soapy in my sink across the room causing me to dash all wet out of the shower to retrieve it. That ordeal really creeped me out to say the least.

A few days later I returned home form work to find my closet torn apart. All my clothes pulled off the rack hanger and all tossed to the floor. On top of which were all my shoes that were pulled out form the shelf. By now I was annoyed but my closet was getting kind of messy so maybe someone was trying to tell me something. Another thing has occured to me and other family members countless times. Only when one of us is home alone and in another part of the house will we hear the garage door run up, a car door close, the door go down, the door leading into the laundry room open and close and foot steps coming into the kitchen. Then who ever is home alone at the time will dash to the kitchen to see who's home but no one will be there and the garage will be empty of cars. Very Disturbing!

I love Kate but this other prankish ghost scares me a little.I don't thank katie and this ghost could be one in the same. For Katie is sweet and loving. What do you think?
