Recently I was chatting with my older sister about ghosts
and she told me a tale that I will now share with you.
The following events occurred in 1971, when my sister,
Lily, was seven years old.
Every summer Lily used to spend a month or two living with
our Grandparents. They lived on a rural farm near Vernon,
Texas.
The farmhouse was modest. It's strangest feature was the
basement. The basement was the same size as the house and
was divided into three rooms.
Two of these rooms were just used for storage and did not
have overhead lights.
A door in the kitchen led into the basement. The stairs
were very steep and didn't have a safety rail. There was
also an outside door to the basement. This door was built
nearly flat on the ground like a storm cellar door.
Lily told me that the basement door in the kitchen had five
sliding bolt locks on it. This was because the door had a
habit of opening by itself.
My Grandmother would keep that door locked all the time. It
was always found open in the morning. My Grandparents
started adding extra locks in an effort to keep it closed.
They finally had to put a dead bolt lock on the door. In the
morning all the other locks would be open, but the door
remained shut.
Then the outside basement doors started to open by
themselves. My Grandparents countered that by stacking wood
on top of them.
Then the lights started to go out. The electricity to the
house was turned on with a large lever switch. This switch
was located in the basement.
Lily said that one day she and my Grandmother were in the
basement. Lily saw the switch turn off by itself before all
the lights went out. My Grandmother grabbed her hand and
started up the basement stairs. Before they could get to
the top, the basement door slammed shut. Fortunately, they
managed to get out.
My Grandmother refused to go into the basement after that.
Lily told me that the electricity would turn itself off
about twice a week. When this happened, they stayed outside
all day until my Grandfather got home from working the
farm. The basement door never slammed shut on him.
Eventually footsteps were heard running up and down the
basement stairs. No one ever opened the door to see what it
was. The same footsteps would also roam the house at night.
I don't think that a ghost was ever seen by anyone.
My Grandparents stayed in that house until 1976 or so. They
always kept the basement door locked, and never allowed me
or my little brother to enter the basement.

IT'S A 'NATURAL' PHENOMENON...RIGHT??
I've long been a lover of ghost stories. I collect them at
every opportunity by encouraging friends and relatives to
tell me their creepy tales.
I've also read many books and seen lots of T.V. specials on
the subject. So being the modest person I am, I considered
myself to be at least a semi-expert.
(Note the past tense.)
My friend, Becky, recently told me her most frightening
experience. At first it appeared to be a classic case of
Sleep Paralysis. I was opening my mouth to tell her so,
when she added an unexpected twist.
Here is her story.
When Becky was seventeen, she lived with her mother in
South Texas. They lived in the country and had the bad
habit of never locking the doors to their house.
One night Becky awakened and discovered that she couldn't
move. This terrorfied her. She then realized that something
evil was standing right outside her window. She could feel
it watching her. She could not turn her head to see "what"
it was.
Eventually she felt it move away, but she still couldn't
move. Becky said that she could feel it's evil as it walked
along the side of the house. She "felt" it turn a corner
and head towards the back door.
She was still paralyzed and scared and then she heard the
back door open. Becky tried to scream for her mother but
could not.
Becky heard slow heavy footsteps begin walking through her
house. The sense of evil grew even stronger until she felt
that "It" was right outside her bedroom door.
Becky was facing the wall of her bedroom and she still
couldn't move. She thought she would die of fright when she
heard her door open. And felt the evil thing enter her room.
Slowly she heard it's footsteps as it walked across her
room and stood by her bed. She could feel it's evil intent
as it stood watching her. Becky was not able to turn her
head so she never saw what it looked like.
Finally she felt it bending over her and that was just too
much. She fainted.
Becky woke up in the morning and everything seemed normal.
She was amazed at the horrible nightmare she experienced. A
month before she had watched a show on Sleep Paralysis and
wondered if she had suffered from it.
At the breakfast table she was glad to see her mom. Becky
was about to tell her mother about her scary dream when her
mom looked at her strangely.
Her mom asked her why she was stomping through the house in
the middle of the night. Why did she open the back door and
leave it that way?
Becky was so scared that she started to cry. If it was only
Sleep Paralysis, then how had her mother heard the same
sounds she did?
