College was a time of many changes in my life. Some were
the normal changes: roommates, majors, and political views.
Some were a tad bit spookier. I never really believed in
ghosts or anything like that. I was raised in a Christian
home. I read spooky stories, but that was the extent of it.
That all changed on Thanksgiving weekend.
I was alone in my dorm room. My roommate had Thanksgiving
at her house in town. The campus was transformed into a
ghost town. Only my R.A. and myself were on the hall in my
dorm. I had just finished doing a paper that was due on
Monday and it was late. I decided that I would turn in. I
got up to turn off the light and I heard something outside.
My dorm was located near a forested area known as “the back
40” A place where students can walk and run on paths. It’s
also great for sledding in the winter.
Anyhow I thought I heard something outside, so I decided to
check it out. I opened the window sat down and listened. At
first nothing out of the ordinary was heard, just the wind
in the trees. So I began to shut the window. It was really
cold. Just then a woman’s scream shattered the silence. I
jumped a few feet off my bed and stood at the window and
looked out. Another scream… And another. It sounded like
someone was being chased. The screams were getting louder
and louder. And stopped outside my window. I was unable to
speak let alone move, so I just stood and watched, listened
rather, to what was going on outside. There was more of the
screaming and then a loud bang. Silence, then what sounded
like someone dragging a heavy load back into the woods.
I ran to my RA’s room and begged her to call the campus
cops. She asked me what was wrong, and I told her that
someone might have been hurt outside. She called, and they
came after they checked out the wooded area carefully. They
told us that no one was out there. The guy suggested that
it might have been a cat fight that I heard, then a
backfire of a car from the highway.
That might explain the loud bang that I heard that night,
but what about the screaming? And what about the dragging
noises after?
That’s my story. Thanks for reading.
