This experience happened to me about 4 or 5 years ago
when I was a sophmore in high school. I had just moved out
to Colorado from Ohio to live with my dad. I had 4 older
brothers from my dad's first marriage and he had just
informed me that we were going to visit one of them( we'll
call him jack) and jack's wife and new born baby boy....my
nephew.
Well I'm a city girl all the way....I've always lived in a
big city, and I am sure I will always live in a big
city......small towns just freak me out for some reason...
(no offense to anyone who lives in a small town).
Well my dad had informed me that jack lived in Wyoming, "Thats not
too bad," I thought to myself. "A few hours drive and
we'll be at the hotel, then we can go to the sites and the
malls and they can show us around the city!" Well then he
informed me that we weren't staying in a hotel we were
staying at jacks and that their town was about the
population of my high school, probably less then that.
Well there I was stuck going to "nowhere" Wyoming with
the not-so-good outlook of when we got there I would be
able to read the new mystery novel I had bought and never
intended to read, but had..."just in case". This was just
great....I think I was really just complaining because I
was downright scared. Even when I think about it now, I
get goose bumps.
We started off early in the morning and
were there by sundown. We all went to dinner and went and
got ice cream at the local ice cream shop then went home
to just sit around and converse.....they didn't even have
cable T.V. for crying out loud. So, due to lack of interest
I left the room of conversation for the bedroom of
boredom, and decided to read my book.
I got pretty far into it before I realized it was really late about 2:30
in the morning. I looked outside, the moon was full...it
cast an eerie glow over everything in site.
Well being 16 years old at the time and also being
extremely bored, and realizing this town probably didn't
even have shoplifters let alone murderers or anything like
that, I thought, "hell, what the hey....I should go
outside and look around"
Well the second I stepped outside I noticed that the
crickets were unbelievably loud, when the door shut behind
me they shut up for a second, then figuring everything was
ok, they started their chorus again. I walked to the main
road....The only main road, the only road with a stop
light on it, and there was only one stop light on it. That
was how small their town was you could see end to end, and
it probably would have only taken about ten minutes to
walk the entire length of the town.
Then I started to freak out, I realized exactly how small this town really
was. I also noticed that everything was closed. As I
walked around I noticed all the store signs. All, for
the most part, closed around the same time, 10:00pm. I also
realized that all the light around me was coming from the
moon. All the street lights...the whole 4 they had....were
off. That was strange to me because weren't street lights
meant to be on at night. It was as if they were trying to
be invisible in the night, unseen...and they probably
would have been had it not been for the moon.
Then I started to get bored and wanted to look around
the outskirts of the town. As I was walking I hit the
edge of the town, where there was the city sign. When I
walked past it I felt as if I shouldn't be there, as if
there was something beyond this town that was unable to
get in, but once you stepped out you were "it's" for the
taking. I freaked out and ran back to the sign. And I did
it again....and again it was the same feeling. I was about
to turn around and hi-tail it back to by brothers house
when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. It
was darting in and out of the shadows of the surrounding
brush but it stayed out long enough once for me to get a
good look at it. It was like nothing I have ever seen in
my entire life...and I like being scared, I like the
thought of ghosts and things like that, I might even say
that I've had other little encounters, but nothing like
this.
It was black, pitch black...not see-through or
misty, just hollow nothingness. Like where this thing
existed there was a void of time, space and matter. It had
no real definite shape and was incredibly fast. It would
have been only a blur if it had not stopped for those few
moments. It knew I was there. This thing instantaneously
made the hair all over my body stand straight up and my
body went freezing cold. It scared me so much I had to
catch my breath, and had forgotten to blink for a few
seconds. When I did, my eyes started to sting and I had to
leave them closed for a few seconds. I could hear it
moving, but when I finally opened my eyes it was gone.
Needless to say I ran so fast back to the house and just
sat up in bed all night, just thinking about what I saw. I
didn't say anything to my dad or brother because I didn't want
to get into trouble for being out at night. So when I got
back to Denver I told my boyfriend....he just laughed at
me and said I was a good story teller, then asked if I
wanted to go get a bite at the little cafe around the
corner. It was no use trying to press the issue, he didn't
believe me, and I haven't told anybody until now.
So if
anyone can explain what happened to me I'd love to
know....thanks
( p.s. no wonder I'm scared of small towns
huh?)
