The Linen Closet

NSW, Australia
February 2001

Hi. I have been lucky enough to have 2 stories published on castle of spirits. This is my 3rd and final story, and this is the one that freaked me out the most.

In 1993, my mother, myself and my 3 younger brothers moved into a new home that my mother had just brought. Everything was going fine up until about 3 months after we had been there. The first thing that happened was we all noticed a cold spot in the hallway outside the linen closet. Along with the cold spot there would always be a foul smell which we could never explain. This went on for months and we became so used to it that we forgot about it.

Another few months went by and then things started to go missing, (such as keys, money etc). We would all search the house for these items but we could never find them. Then out of the blue sometimes months later, they would turn up out of nowhere. This really freaked us out but never the less, we put up with it.

It came to a head one day when I was standing in front of the closet with my mum while she was putting some linen away, all of a sudden we heard a female voice say "come in". My mum just dropped the linen and we both went into the loungeroom scared to death. After we had a talk about what we had heard, we both agreed that the voice came from inside the linen closet and sounded like the voice of an elderly female. There was no one else home at the time except my mum and I.

A few more months went by and I was shocked one day when my mum came to me and asked if I had re-arranged the linen in the closet. I told her that I hadn't, and she was dumbstruck. What had happened was every time my mum would put linen away, we would find that the linen closet would be totally re-arranged not long after. This went on for about 4 years, and was happening right up until the day we moved out. I still talk about this with my mum and we both have no explanation as to what was doing it.

I asked some of the neighbours about the previous owners and I was told that an elderly woman had lived there, and that she was very fussy about how things were put in the house. She had died in the house about 4 years before my mum had brought it.Could the ghost of the old woman still be in that house organising the linen closet the way she had it when she was alive? And was it her voice that we heard? I guess we will never know.
