Best Friends Forever (2)

September 2004

Everyone has a best friend, right? Very dear and near to your heart? This story is about my best friend, whom I was very close to.

At the age of 8 my mother and I moved to a very small town in Ohio. The population couldn't have been more than 100. Anyway, it was a new experience for me since we use to live in "The Big Apple", New York.

Across the street was a girl, Monica, who looked to be around my age, and since there weren't any other kids around for me to play with I was kind of forced to play with her. We soon became really good friends to best friends. Monica and I spent every moment with each other. We were inseparable.

At the age of 12 Monica was diagnosed with Leukemia. The whole town was devastated, and for me being so young I didn't know how serious it was, and I don't think she knew either. She was always sick and in and out of the hospital, it was so hard on everyone, but she always had a smile on her face.

A couple of years later when we were 14, I went to New York for a couple of weeks to visit my father. One night I was terribly sick, vomiting, having cold sweats, and coughing uncontrollably. Nobody knew what was wrong with me.

The next day my mother had called to tell me that Monica had died at her house the night before. I didn't know what to do or think. I couldn't stop myself from crying. My father had taken me home so I could go to the funeral. I was so mad at myself for not being there for her. I kept thinking she would still be alive if I wouldn't have left her alone.

The day of the funeral I went to her bedroom. While I was in New York she had made a scrapbook of our friendship. I was sobbing the whole entire time. Just then I heard a voice behind me say "Hey". I turned around and right before my eyes was Monica. She looked beautiful and healthy and happy. She had a huge smile on her face and said "Best Friends Forever". I rubbed my eyes and she was gone.

I couldn't believe how relieved I felt. I knew she was in a better place and was looking over me. In 9 years I have not told anyone about that day, until now. I am very happy to experience what I have experienced.I will always love her, she's my Best Friend.

Thanks for reading.
