Blinking Lights

This isn't much of a ghost story, but it sort of freaked me out.
Anyway, this happened to me at around 9 o'clock (PM) in January 2001. Naturally, it was very dark out. I had just let my dog out and looked up at the sky in deep thought. I saw four or five blinking lights moving in no certain direction. But, what was really weird was that they seemed to appear out of nowhere. I ran as fast as I could to my room, grabbed my binoculars, and took a closer look.
I looked, but I couldn't make out any actual shape, but I knew that these couldn't be planes. I looked away for a few seconds, and when I looked back, the lights were gone! Maybe I was seeing things, but I'm sure that I wasn't. I think that these lights may have been UFO's, but I'm not sure...
