Ghost For Me

New Hampshire, USA
August 1999

When I was about 8 years old my grandfather died. I don't remember a lot about him, all I remember is what I've been told, and this is not obviously remembering anything. But, what I do remember is his fairly good sense of humor. He always seemed to me and my younger brother to be a fairly funny type of guy. That was my grandfather that I knew.

Anyway, when he died, he was living in Massachusetts with my grandmother. I was living here in New Hampshire with my mom and brother. On the day that he died we received a telephone call (not sure from who) and we were informed that he had died peacefully in his sleep. When we arrived at my grandmothers later that day my father (it was his dad that had died) came to talk to me.

"Do you know where your grandfather is?" He asked me.
"He's in the hospital." I replied, because this is what I had been told.
"No. He passed away last night." My dad replied.
It was the only time I've ever seen my dad cry.

My parents felt that I was to young to attend the funeral, so I had to stay at my grandmother's house. While I was there, I went into the room where my grandfather's things were kept. That was when I saw him. In the corner of the room, my grandfather was sitting in his favorite chair. And the thing was, it wasn't like in the movies or anything when they show that you can seen right through them (ghosts). He seemed to be really sitting there. Granted for how much I missed him, I turned from the room and very rarely do I go back into the room. There have been times when I have slept in the room, undisturbed, but there is just something about the pictures of him on the wall during the (Korean) war, and the old black-and-whites of his wedding. I just fell really edgy about being in there alone...Night or day.
