Guardian Angel (6)

Canada
March 2002

These are incidents that happened to me while I was living with my parents in a house we rented in Victoria, BC. We rented this house for eight years, at the beginning of which I was 11 years old.

The house didn't bother me much to begin with, despite the fact that I hated to be alone in the basement. My room was upstairs though, and across the hall from my parents, so I figured I was safe from ghoulies. Besides that, I had my trusty night-light, and insisted on keeping the hall light on and my door open at night.

One night, I woke up at 3:16 a.m., I remember the time because my alarm clock was the only light in my room. My first reaction was one of panic; why was my door closed, and what happened to my night-light? This panic was compounded when I looked to the foot of my bed and saw a man standing there, looking at me. At first I thought someone had gotten into the house and was in my room, but I quickly realised that this "person" wasn't solid, but rather transparent. I wanted to scream, but I was afraid whatever this was would come at me, so I ducked under my covers.

Hoping it would be gone, I looked back a few seconds later. He was still there! Only by now I had started to calm down, and noticed that the apparition was smiling at me. After that he just faded away, and I ran into my parents room and begged to spend the rest of the night there. When they asked me why, I explained what I had seen. My parents both dismissed my claims, although they couldn't figure out why my door had been closed; both of them swore they hadn't touched it.

In the morning I went to throw out my night-light which I thought had burnt out, only to find that it was working again.

A few years later I had a dream about the man that I saw. He told me he was my guardian angel, and that I should call him Gus. I thought it was kind of a funny dream, and I didn't take it seriously. I joked about it to my mom the next day, and she seemed freaked out. I asked her why she didn't think it was funny, and she told me that my grandfather (her father that had passed away when I was only a few months old), his middle name was Gustav. One of his nicknames had been "Gus".

In the years since then, there are times when I swear I feel the presence of who I believe to be my guardian angel.
