He's Still With Me

Up front let me say that I am a 50yr old woman. I'm very sane and down to earth. My story is very true. My story isn't scary but I think it proves (at least to me) that animals do have souls and do understand you when you talk to them. Now on with my story.
A few years ago I had a little dog named Duke. He was one of three that I had. I had just a couple of years before had to put his mother Lil'Bit down due to old age. It was the first time I ever had to do anything like that. It tore my heart apart. I pretty much clung to Duke after that. It was about 3yrs. After that that Duke started to get sick. We had learned from our experience with lil'bit what to do for Duke.
We took him to the vet and she said he had an enlarged heart like his mother. She told us that he only had about 6months to live. It just devastated me.
One night while I was in bed (Duke slept with me and my husband) I talked to Duke. I told him how much I loved him and that I hoped he would stay with me as long as he could. I also told him that when he was ready to let me know and I would take him to the vet to have him put to sleep if that was what he wanted.
Duke stayed with me another 2yrs. He was my constant shadow for that 2yrs. He even came in the bathroom with me and sat between my feet until I was through.
Then one weekend he got very down and wouldn't eat. He was constantly in my arms as much as possible. I knew somehow he was ready to go. I told my husband, Billy, that we had to take him to the vets come Monday. I knew inside that's what he wanted.
Monday we took him over to the vets office. I was so worried because he always hated going there. He would shake all over and literally hang on to me. But this time was different. He didn't shake and he let the vet pick him right up. I knew them for sure he was ready to go. He knew what was going to happen to him. It didn't make any easier on me to have to do it, but I had promised him that I would do it when he was ready. We had him put to sleep and he never moved or made a sound when she put the needle in. I'm very glad that he didn't I don't think I could have stood it if he had. We took him home and buried him in our backyard, along with his mother. We bury all our animals in our backyard. We have our own little pet cemetery.
Now a few weeks later I was just coming out of the bathroom and I don't know what, but something made me turn around and there was Duke just getting up from the bathroom floor. He had been sitting at my feet like he always did when he was alive. I only saw him for about 2 or 3 seconds. But it was enough to let me know that he was still with me and that he still loved me.
To this day I catch site of him or his mother or his brother Sargent we had to put down later.
I don't know if you believe or not, but know pets do love and they do come back. I believe they do have souls and I will see them again when my time comes.
Thanks for reading. I hoped you enjoyed it.
