I heard Their Voices

Years ago, when I was in my early 20's, I was dating a man who worked for a property management company.
Living in California, our town has a large section of homes that date back to the early 1800's. These are beautiful old Victorian style homes, and many are historic buildings.
My boyfriends job was to renovate and restore these homes so that his boss, who owned the company, could resell them.
One Saturday, my boyfriend was going up to one of these old homes, to meet with his boss, and go over the last minute list of items that needed to be done before the home was listed for sale, so I went with him. When we pulled up, I was instantly captivated with the house. It was breathtaking, and seemed so warm and welcoming. When my boyfriend's boss arrived, we all went in to tour the house. As they stood in the kitchen discussing work to be done, I wandered through the home, room by room dreaming of how wonderful it would be to be lucky enough to live in that home. Eventually I wandered up to the 2nd floor, where all the bedrooms were. As I wandered from room to room, I noticed that each bedroom had its own sun room attached, which looked out onto the property and its gorgeous views. As I walked down a large, open hallway, I kept thinking that the house has such a strange layout. I then noticed to my left that there was another hallway, but this led straight to a wall. It was not decorative, or functional, and way too dark to even be a landing, and it struck me instantly as not being right, but I thought, ok, whatever.
I continued no more than 3-4 steps, when I heard a voice shouting at me to Get Out! Get out Now! Hurry, hurry, run! It was loud, frantic, and right in my ear, and I did what it said. I bolted through the house, down the stairs and out onto the back lawn, and realized when I got out there that I was terrified, shaking and crying, only I didn't know why. My boyfriend and his boss had seen me running out of the house, and were right behind me, asking if I was ok, had something happened, was I hurt, was someone upstairs? I instantly realized that #1, they had not heard the voice screaming, and #2 it was a female voice.
Since we 3 were the only ones there, and they were both males, I was now confused. I tried my best to explain what happened without sounding like a complete nutter, but quite honestly I felt such a fool. My boyfriend and his his boss were both clearly concerned, but all I wanted to do was leave. At that point, I thought what the heck. I proceeded to tell them exactly what had happened upstairs. Finally, my boyfriend's boss said "Honey, there is no way that you could have known this, but this particular home had been very large, about twice its size. It was occupied by a family that had lots of kids. During the mid 1800's, there was a large, tragic fire, in which several members of the family died, including several children, one of them being a teenage girl. The family's loss was so devastating that instead of rebuilding, they cleared away the burnt half of the house, and walled off the remainder, leaving only what remains now." Apparently, the hallway that led to the wall, was the main hallway to the other part of the house that was no longer there. The house had been repaired enough to look like nothing had happened.
Whoever or whatever told me to leave the house that day, I don't know. But I know this, from that moment on, I truly believed in life after death, in spirits and the like.
