Encounter Summary:
During a late-night fishing trip at Surfside Jetty County Park, three of us waded out approximately 300 feet into the surf, spaced about 10 feet apart, under floodlights we had set up on the beach. The water was calm, and the night peaceful—until we heard the unmistakable sound of a young woman sobbing.
She appeared waist-deep in the water, illuminated by the floodlights. Her long black hair was wet at the ends, and she wore a sheer white nightgown with lace trim and an open-front over-shirt. Her silhouette was clearly visible through the fabric, and she stood facing the ocean, hands raised to her face, crying loudly.
Behind her on the beach stood a man in khaki pants and a tucked-in button-down shirt, resembling someone dressed in business casual attire. I assumed they had argued, and she had walked into the water in distress.
Her crying was so intense it disturbed the fish and prompted us to end our fishing early. As the others walked past me, I lingered, about 15–20 feet from her. She never turned to face me, continuing to sob into the night.
From the deck of our rented beach house just over the sand dune, one of our friends—watching us set up the floodlights—asked my brother, “Who is that girl walking behind them in the water? You can hear her crying.”
This comment, made in real time, corroborates the sighting.
Years later, I recounted the story to my wife, who immediately recognized the description as matching the legend of La Llorona, the Weeping Woman of Mexican folklore. The resemblance was uncanny. I asked others who were present that night, but most didn’t recall the event—except for that one comment from the deck.

Notable Details:
• The woman’s appearance and behavior matched traditional depictions of La Llorona.
• Her presence was unexplained and not acknowledged by others on the beach.
• The man onshore was never seen interacting with her.
• The event was forgotten by others but remained vivid in my memory.
• A comment from the deck during the event confirms the presence of the crying woman.
