Shaking Bed (1)

Arkansas, USA
November 1999

This happened in 1977 while I was a manager for a fast-food franchise in the small town of Camden, Arkansas.

Camden has it's share of ghost stories, and to tell the truth the place looked sort of creepy during my childhood when my family visited relatives there. I've heard a dozen stories about the ghosts, and mysteries of Camden, but laughed them all off as stories designed to frighten children. But I was to get my own taste of the paranormal.

I had taken charge of the Store in Camden only a week before, and hadn't had time to look for a place to live, so I was staying in an old hotel near the store. I was sleeping, and had been for hours, when I was awakened by my bed doing a crazy dance, like a massive earthquake was going on! My life has not been uneventful, and at first I suspected a practical joke, so I jumped off the bed and looked under it. There was nothing under the bed, and nothing attached to the bed, so I dressed and stepped out into the hall to see what was going on.

It was quiet in the hallway, just like you would expect at 3 A.M., and no one was looking out of any of the other rooms, so I went downstairs to the lobby. Business as usual there with the night clerk doing the paperwork for the day. Going back up to my room I sat and thought about it for a few minutes, coming to several conclusions, beginning with the hotel was constructed of concrete and steel, so vibration through a wooden floor was out. The bed had been bouncing up and down like someone was on both ends and picking it up, and had made no sound. It had continued for at least a full minute AFTER I woke up, and only stopped when I jumped out of the bed.

One other thing sticks out about the incident, but I didn't notice it at the time, I asked for another room and got it with no questions asked, at 3:30 A.M..The new room was on another floor. The store closed a couple of weeks later and I moved on, and a few years later the hotel was torn down, so I put the story away in my mind. I don't believe in ghosts, but the incident happened no matter what I believe.
