Spirit in the Chair

Indiana, USA
June 1999

When I was about 5 years old, I went for a visit to my grandparents house. I had finished dinner before everyone else and went into the basement. The room had a T.V., couch, and all the furnishings. You might be able to call it a den. Anyway, I went down there, by myself, and turned on the T.V. I had no lights on and I sat down in front of he T.V. and proceeded to watch Popeye. A few minutes passed and I heard a "popping" noise. I turned around and I saw a white figure sitting in the chair next to the fireplace. It looked smokey and blurry. The figure turned its head to the side and then slowly faded away. I was scared like you wouldn't believe, and ran upstairs faster than you could imagine. I started to shiver, and my mom asked me what was wrong. I told her I was cold. When everyone went downstairs, I went over to the chair that I had seen the ghost in, there was a depression in the chair like someone had just been sitting in it. As soon as I started to calm down, I rethought the incident, and I realized that the spirit looked like my great-grandpa Ernie. He passed away before I was born but I had seen pictures of him.

A few years passed and I sat down with my grandfather (in the same room) and told him about the encounter. After I told him that I thought it was my great-grandpa I had seen, he said one thing. He said, "You know what, that is so strange because your great-grandfather always used to sit in that chair."
