The Growler

It happened one summer "night" when I was 12 years old. For some reason I woke up at 4am in the morning with the freakiest feeling, like I was not alone. So I reached over to the side of my bed and turned on my radio (thinking listening to music would make me feel better and that I'd eventually fall back to sleep). Well, I was very wrong.

As I mentioned it was summer. We had our screen windows on, and as usual, I had my bedroom door shut. As I lay there with the sheet over my head, I tried desperately to listen to the music, all the while feeling totally scared and not knowing why. Then, all of the sudden, I heard a growling sound at the foot of my bed. It didn't sound like a human or animal. It was very deep sounding, and angry. I was terrified and frozen solid.

The growling lasted for about 8 seconds. When it stopped I jumped out of my bed and ran into my mom's room. I told her what happened and she searched my room and found nothing, the screen window was also intact, so it's not like an animal got in. Plus our dog always slept in the living room and would go wild if someone so much as walked by our house.

The rest of the night I slept in my mom's room and clung to her like pyjamas. I didn't sleep a wink. My Mom always insisted that I just had a very bad dream UNTIL....

Four years later in late November her and my brother (who was also 12 at the time) were lying in her bed together. Sometimes while my dad was at work, my brother would sleep with my mom as he was always scared of our house. Well, they were talking and laughing, when the next thing you know they both heard a growling. At first my mom ignored it, then it got louder. She thought that it was me playing tricks on them. She laughed and said "Jenn, stop it". Little did she know that I was fast asleep in my room. So, when the noise continued, she got up and turned on the light--nothing was there.

We've had other strange things happen in our home.

One day my mom was sitting on the couch in the living room. She had the feeling that she was being watched. So she looked up at the door and saw a man's face in the bottom window pain. The man had a long beard. He disappeared about three seconds later. She quickly got off the couch and looked outside, but didn't see anyone--this all happened in broad daylight.

Another time my mom woke up early in the morning to hear the dresser drawers and closet doors in my room opening and shutting very loudly. She thought that I was packing to go see my boyfriend, who I was to visit two days later. She was wrong. That night and morning I happened to sleep like a baby and NEVER woke up once. Still, she insists that she heard those noises coming out of my room for at least 10 minutes.

Other times my mom and I have seen silver light pass by the corner of our eyes while standing in the bathroom. My brother's room is where the light was headed to. We've only seen this a few times, but it was within the same two days.

I'm not sure what the deal was with our house. My dad built it himself around 20 yrs. ago. Maybe the manifestations have to do with the land it was built on. We were told that Indians camped there in the summer months during the early 1900's. I hate to say it, but part of me is glad that my parents don't live there anymore.
